IDENTITY IN CHRIST: We Are Heirs
We get benefits by being God’s adopted children! Not only do we get a whole other family (click here for an episode on God’s church), but we also are heirs and get an inheritance! This episode focuses on the promise God has for his children - the gift of an inheritance that will last for all eternity.
“Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on. 4 God has something stored up for you in heaven, where it will never decay or be ruined or disappear.” 1 Peter 1:3-4 CEV
Imagine… What were you like a few years ago? Maybe 5 years ago if you’re old enough to remember that far ago. What is a toy you had that was really important to you? What did you do with it? What did you love about it? Where is it now? Is it still important?
What is a toy you have now that is really important to you?
Imagine yourself in 5 years time. How old are you? What year will you be in at school?
Will that possession still be important to you? Can you picture yourself with it now? Where is it? In the cupboard? Broken? Has it been binned or sold on eBay?
When I was a baby I loved a sheepskin. I took it to bed, in my pram, everywhere. I called it my shoosh-oosh. My girls love their blanks like I loved my shoosh-oosh.
I outgrew that shoosh-oosh and don’t have many memories of it. But my mother kept it and gave it to me when I was an adult. It was a dirty old sheepskin of no value to me. I had no memories of it and I chucked it!
Heaven will not be like that - it will not perish (die), spoil or fade.
“God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father. God’s Spirit makes us sure that we are his children. His Spirit lets us know that together with Christ we will be given what God has promised. We will also share in the glory of Christ, because we have suffered with him.” Romans 8:15-17
We get an inheritance! Normally you have to wait until someone died and doesn’t need it anymore, but in this case you must die to get it.
