IDENTITY IN CHRIST: We Are Justified

IDENTITY IN CHRIST: We Are Justified

Today’s episode is about how we are justified.

Q. What does Justified mean? (easy way to remember: Just-If-I’d never sinned)

It is similar to being righteous, made right with God. It is about the sin being taken away.

Have your sins been taken away?

If you’re not sure, go back and listen to the Gospel Story (Jesus Colours) episodes (link here) for more detail on this!

People who don’t believe in God often mistakenly think Christians are perfect.

This is NOT TRUE!

Christians are sinners just like everyone else in the world.

Sin is our thoughts, actions or lack of actions (not doing something) that is disobeying God. We all do it. We try not to, but we all do it.

What do you think?

Imagine you have shoplifted. SENSES

You stole a packet of lollies from the corner shop.

The shop keeper sees you and takes you to the local police station.

You are feeling really guilty. You know you’ve done the wrong thing.

You are repentant. You repent and say “sorry you won’t do it again.”

But someone has to pay the punishment for the wrong thing that you did.

You get a fine. $200! But you don’t have that money! Your parents pay for it for you.

They look after you and sort out the problem.

Bible Passage:

Psalm 103:12

“How far has the Lord taken

    our sins from us?

    Farther than the distance

    from east to west!”

Today’s Story:

A similar thing happened to me when I was in year 10 at school. I caught the train to the local shops without a ticket. I got caught and I was given a fine that my parents paid for. They loved me and forgave me.

It was JUST if I’d never done it.

Bible Passage: Romans 5:1-2

“By faith we have been made acceptable to God. And now, because of our Lord Jesus Christ, we live at peacewith God. 2 Christ has also introduced us to God’s undeserved kindness on which we take our stand. So we are happy, as we look forward to sharing in the glory of God.”

Q. What does this verse mean? Do you understand it? Are there any tricky words?

Q. How do we get justified?

Q. What do we get when we become justified/our sins taken away? “Peace with God”

Q. What does Peace with God mean? It means a friendship where sin isn’t in the way. We can pray and come in God’s presence and we can go to Heaven when we die.

Have you ever have had a fight with your friends? I used to fight with my big sister all the time. I would hit her and annoy her. Naomi always forgave me.

God is the best friend anyone could ever have, because he will always forgive you and be your friend again if you want Him to.

THE BEST BIT:

How does being justified (having our sins taken away) and getting peace with God affect your identity, who you are?

  • We don’t have to worry about accidentally sinning, as we know God makes us just again!

  • We don’t have to worry about God being far away, we have peace with him!

  • We can live our lives relaxed, knowing that God is our friend, because there is no sin getting in the way.

  • Because God is our friend, we know we have an amazing power taking care of us, listening to our prayers, loving us and helping us in our lives!!!

Discussion Questions:

  1. If you are justified, chat about how that affects your identity, who you are.

  2. If you have peace with God, how does that change how you live your life?

  3. If you have not been justified, chat about what has led you to come to the decision to not make peace with God.
